Weight Gain from Exercise In our weekly fitness Q series, William Sukala, MS, CSCS, answers questions about fitness, from whether to eat before exercising to how to treat sore muscles. Q: I work out using an elliptical machine 2 3 times per week for about an hour. The other days I use an exercise video. When I use the elliptical machine, I seem to gain weight! Should I limit my time on it? I feel I am not improving my conditioning level nor am I losing weight. A: First, I want you to remember: Exercise is not the enemy! It is possible to gain a little bit of "weight," with exercise. Remember that endurance trained muscles develop an improved ability to store carbohydrates, called muscle glycogen. This glycogen attracts water into the muscle, which could account for some mild weight gain. But remember, gaining weight on the scale tells you nothing about the composition of that weight gain. It’s possible that you’re gaining muscle. As I’ve said in previous Q responses, muscle is the good stuff. It is metabolically active and burns more calories than fat does to sustain itself. Try not to focus on absolute weight as a sole indicator of your progress. Rather, consider your percent body fat and how your clothes fit.
